The Miracle of Eyesight

After describing how the human eye lens is not as flexible as we age, my eye doctor described the eye muscles, and how the lens flexes and how the eyes work, stating,” it’s an absolute miracle.” To which I replied, “Our eye design is no accident.” “Exactly,” he said.

The human eye provides clear evidence for a creator for those willing to see it. God made the first set of eyes in Adam and, a short time later, in Eve. The human eye is a miraculous organ in the human body. My eye doctor is an Ophthalmologist, which means he can perform surgeries and has even more intense training than an Optometrist.[1] He knows the human eye. He has spent years studying it, correcting vision, and even performing surgery on it.

The Cleveland Clinic posted “20 Fascinating Facts” about the human eye. Here are three highlights I saw:

  1. The six muscles in each of your eyes move faster than any other muscles in your body. Your brain uses these zippy muscles to control eye movement through three cranial nerves.
  2. When the lenses in your eyes focus an image on your retina, it’s upside down and backward. Your brain reorients and right-sizes the image for you while “developing” what you see.
  3. Seven million photoreceptor cone cells in your retina bring you the world in living color. Your brain can interpret an estimated 10 million different colors, too. (No wonder we have so many paint options!)[2]

These are incredible facts! The eye, as a functioning sensory organ, has minuscule components working together to receive light, sort the distortion of that light in “frames,” and then, in milliseconds, send a signal to the brain telling you what it is you are looking at. It’s really a miracle. Like my Ophthalmologists said – the human eye is a miracle!

The eye is also used in a literal and metaphorical way in the Bible. For example,

  1. Jesus indicates how the eye works, bringing vision and light into the body, saying, “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” (Matthew 6:22)
  2. Satan tempts Eve and appeals to her eyesight. “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5)
  3. Peter echoes what Isaiah wrote about the eye and how little we can anticipate or understand the grandeur of eternity with God. “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

The eyes God has given you may decline with time with blurry vision or diminished clarity. That’s part of the curse of this fallen world. I use corrective vision appliances, such as contacts and glasses. What’s impressive to me is when people have new eye lenses attached directly to their eyes. The modern medical treatment for correcting vision is incredible and intricate. Just like the great skill needed for a surgeon to make a repair or adjustment to the human eye, the Lord designed and created the eye.

Jesus also commented about the spiritual sight required to see the Kingdom of Heaven stating in Matthew 13:16, “But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.” If you have not yet seen Jesus as the resurrected savoir, ask the Lord to give you eyes of faith to see him for who he truly is. Spiritual eyesight is a miracle too!

Next time you get a set of classes, talk to your eye doctor about the miracle of eyesight!
