Prophecy and Power: The Iranian Plateau from Elam and Persia to Iran

In the study of eschatology, we often look for “signs of the times.” However, to understand where we are going, we must first understand where we began. The geographic heart of modern Iran—anciently known as Persia and Elam—is not just a theater of modern war; it is a landscape of ancient prophecy.

As we navigate the current tensions of 2026, including the coordinated efforts of Operation Epic Fury and Operation Roaring Lion, we see a script being written that was penned thousands of years ago. The land is being shaped by God… for the future.

Elam, Persia, and a person representing this geographical location, Gog, are all understood to be the land of present-day Iran. The Book of Daniel, in chapter 2 specifically gives insight to the kingdoms of the earth. Persia/Iran is part of the image Nebuchanezzar sees in his vision.

The Geographic Constant: Ancient Elam

The Iranian Plateau is the nation’s massive heartland. This elevated geographic area has been known as the Iranian Plateau for millennia. Historically, this region was anchored by the people called Elam (the lowlands) and the Persian Highlands (named after the Persians who migrated into the Elamites area, absorbing the Elamites).

  • Susa: The capital of Elam became the administrative heart of the Persian Empire. Read the Book of Esther for insight.
  • Genesis 10 & 14: We see Elam appearing early in the biblical record, from the lineage of Shem to the military campaigns of Chedorlaomer.

This geography isn’t accidental. It provides the physical stage for the conflict we see today. The transition from the Gulf lowlands to the high plateau remains the key strategic reality for military planners in 2026, just as it was for the Elamite kings.

The name change from Persia to Iran occurred in 1935 to make the name more inclusive of all the various people living in the country. HistoryHit.com says, “The name Iran had long been used – dating back to the Zoroastrians (1000BC) – along with other variations on the name, including Arya (literally, Land of the Aryans).”1

Long before Islam and before the occasional worship of the Hebrew God, Jehovah (think Book of Esther), the Persians were polytheistic, but primarily practiced the Zoroastrian religion.

God Moves the Hearts of Kings

Proverbs 21:1-2 says: “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” History proves that God uses world leaders—both the righteous and the rebellious—to fulfill His timing:

  1. Cyrus the Great: Named by God before his birth, Cyrus was the “King of Persia” who issued the decree to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem (Ezra 1:1).
  2. Queen Esther: Positioned in the Susa palace “for such a time as this,” she prevented the annihilation of the Jewish people within the Persian borders.

Whether it is a decree from ancient Susa or a command center in 2026, no geopolitical move happens outside the sovereign boundary of the Almighty.

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Hosseini Khamenei, has been likened to the hateful and evil Persian leader, Haman, who, as second in command, created a campaign to annihilate the Jews in the Persian Empire. The book of Esther is the historical account, among other ancient documents, that describes these events. Haman was eventually executed, and Mordichai, Esther’s uncle, was promoted to second-in-command in Persia. Note that a Jewish man was a primary leader in Persia (Iran), and there are several instances of peace between the Persians and the Israelis. When Khamenei was killed in the opening of Operation Epic Fury, many have connected this to Haman, and it must not be overlooked that he was killed on the exact same day as Haman, 2500 years later. The Jews celebrate and commemorate this deliverance from Haman annually in what is called Purim.

The Identity of the Adversary: Gog and the Prince of Darkness

A critical question in this is whether Gog is a literal person or a manifestation of spiritual evil. In Ezekiel 38, Gog is a ruler (a person), yet we must recognize the spiritual “Prince of Darkness” (Revelation 16:10) who counterfeits himself as an angel of light. Whether a physical regime or a demonic force, the intent remains the same: the opposition of God’s people and the pursuit of power. In revelation Gog and Magog emerge 1000 years later to oppose the Lord one more time (Revelation 20). This final rebellion and its leaders derive their name from the names of the real people who opposed God in the first massive attack on Israel as described in Ezekiel 38-39.

The Prophetic Timeline: From Dry Bones to Roaring Lions

The 20th and 21st centuries have seen an acceleration of the prophetic clock. Since the resurrection of Jesus, we have been living in “the last days.”

1. The Rebirth of Israel (1948)

The establishment of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948, represents a partial fulfillment of Ezekiel 37—the “Dry Bones” coming together. This event set the stage for every conflict that has followed. Without a regathered Israel, the prophecies of the “End of Days” cannot be fulfilled. At the same time, the people of Israel, for the most part) are not followers of Jehovah God. It is a secular society. The spiritual breath of God that Ezekiel 37 has not happened yet. There will be a day when a majority of Hebrew people repent and turn to God once again. In this revival, the Lord will breathe a spiritual new life into the people. God will be their God, and they will be His people.

2. The 2026 Flashpoint

We now find ourselves in the midst of a joint U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict.

  • Operation Epic Fury: The U.S. response to regional threats that includes preventing attacks on U.S. interests abroad.
  • Operation Roaring Lion: Israel’s decisive actions against the Iranian nuclear threat and its existential survival fight.

When we look at Ezekiel 38, we see a coalition led by Gog and Magog that includes Persia (Iran). The current alignment of Russia, Iran, and their proxies mirrors the very coalition Ezekiel described over 2,500 years ago.

Looking Toward the New Jerusalem

While the headlines focus on missiles and maneuvers, the believer looks further ahead. The “Future” as described in the Bible reminds us that the ultimate destination of history is not a scorched plateau, but a restored creation.

The conflict of 2026 is a “labor pain” leading toward the establishment of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21). The present-day conflict may or may not be Ezekiel 38 -39. The first evidence of this is if the Hebrews are revived in spirit and God supernaturally delivers them with extraordinary natural (supernatural) events, as indicated by Ezekiel 38:18-23. This passage says there will be earthquakes, hailstorms, and a plague that destroys Gog and Magog as they are attacking Israel.

A second piece of evidence that this present-day conflict is Ezekiel 38-39 will be the Temple and Temple Mount in Jerusalem. One of the missiles randomly fired from Iran landed less than a mile from the Temple Mount in the early strikes of the 2026 conflict. The Temple dimensions and scope of the renewed Temple are recorded in Ezekiel 40-48. It is apparent that the river flowing from the Temple and the magnificence of this Temple make it the Millennial Kingdom Temple.

A third piece of evidence about this war and Ezekiel 38-39 is the dimensions of Jerusalem itself. The walls of Jerusalem in Nehemiah’s day were around 2.5 miles in circumference. The walls today are around 2.5 miles in circumference. The walls around Jerusalem in Ezekiel’s vision have a circumference of 6 miles. This means if this present-day conflict expands the size of Jerusalem, it could be Ezekiel 38-39.

Further in the future, the New Jerusalem, coming from God out of Heaven, is 2500 miles in cube shape, according to Revelation 21.

Our mission at Truth Defended is to provide a biblical perspective on these terrifying headlines—not to stir fear, but to anchor our hope in the One who holds the hearts of kings.

Conclusion: A Call to Watch

If the current 2026 conflict is not the final Ezekiel 38 war, we know that the next regime in Iran will eventually turn on Israel again. In that event, God will supernaturally rescue Israel, and no other country will be able to get the credit. In that attack, Israel will not be able to defend herself, and the U.S. will not be able to come to the rescue. The people of the world will know that God showed up for His people.

History and prophecy are cyclical until the return of the King. While waiting for Jesus, our instructions are clear:

  • Do not live in fear.
