Seeking the Answer to “What is Truth?”

That is a profound question, and one that people have been asking for thousands of years! The great thing is that this article offers a very direct and meaningful answer from a Christian perspective.

Where Does the Question Come From?

The question “What is truth?” is one of the most famous in history because it was asked by Pontius Pilate to Jesus Himself (John 18:38). It’s a powerful moment because, the truth, Jesus, was literally standing right in front of him, but he didn’t recognize it.

The Biblical Answer: Jesus is the Truth

According to Christian theology, the answer isn’t just an idea or a concept—it’s a person: Jesus Christ.

  • He stated plainly, “I Am the Truth” (John 14:6).
  • He also promised, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). This suggests that truth is something active, something that can change your life and bring freedom.

In the Greek, the word for truth is (alētheia), which simply means “what is true.”1 The Bible claims that God’s Word is the ultimate source of that truth (John 17:17). Truth is what is real, genuine, and actual. It’s real things, facts, and events.2 Jesus is absolute truth.

The Heart of the Message: Salvation

The concept of Truth directly relates to salvation, because the entire story of the Bible—from Genesis to Revelation—is a rescue mission centered on Jesus.

The core message of salvation through Jesus is this:

  1. Believe: Believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who lived a perfect life, died to pay for sin, and rose again.
  2. Receive: Confess your faith in Him and receive Him into your life as your Lord and Savior.
  3. Become: When you believe and receive Jesus, you are “born again” and become a son or daughter of God (John 1:12).
