All-Power, PART 3

In Luke chapter 8, we encounter a remarkable “interwoven” miracle. As we conclude the “All Power” series, we see Jesus moving from the early days of His ministry in Galilee toward two lives at a crossroads: a woman who had been sick for twelve years and a young girl who was twelve years of age.

This passage demonstrates that Jesus is not merely a master teacher or a historical figure; He is the Superintendent of the Universe with absolute authority over the human body, the hurting heart, and the soul.

1. The Significance of Twelve

The number 12 appears twice in this narrative, and in Scripture, it often represents organized completion under divine rule.

  • The Girl: At 12 years old, she was at the threshold of the Bat Mitzvah age—transitioning from childhood to being a “daughter of the commandment.” She was now a young woman in the eyes of society.
  • The Woman: She had suffered for 12 years, meaning her illness began the very year the young girl was born. One’s life of joy was beginning just as the other’s life of suffering started.

2. Power in the Hem of His Garment

As Jesus traveled to the home of Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, a woman reached through the crowd to touch the “border” of His garment. This was likely the tassel (tzitzit) on the corner of His cloak, a blue cord required by the Law of Moses to remind Israel of God’s commandments.

The Threefold Power of Christ

When Jesus asked, “Who touched me?” He noted that virtue (power) had gone out of Him. This reinforces the three types of power we have studied in this series:

  1. Dunamis (Ability/Dynamite): The supernatural power that flowed into the woman to stop her “issue of blood” immediately.
  2. Exousia (Authority/Right): Jesus has the executive right to heal and forgive.
  3. Kratos (Applied/Grip): The actual application of that power in the moment.

3. Four Ways Jesus Displays All Power

I. Over the Body: He Heals the Incurable

The woman had spent “all her living” on physicians. In the ancient world, and even in the 17th century (like Louis XIII of France), medical science often involved “bloodletting” and other depleting treatments that did more harm than good.

  • Trust and Treatment: While we value modern medicine, we must ultimately trust Jesus. Take your medicine, but place your faith in the Great Physician.
  • Persistent Faith: This woman didn’t give up. After 12 years of being “unclean” and isolated, she still believed one touch was enough.

II. Over the Heart: He Validates the Hurting

Jesus called her “Daughter.” This is a term of affection and acceptance. In a “throwaway society,” Jesus looks for the outcasts—the lonely, the sinful, and the broken—and says, “You are Mine.” > “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”Matthew 11:28

III. Over the Soul: He Reclaims the Dead

When the messenger arrived to tell Jairus, “Thy daughter is dead,” Jesus replied, “Fear not: believe only.” To the world, the window of hope was closed. To Jesus, death is merely “sleep” from which He can awaken us.

  • The Miracle of Resurrection: This was not just a healing. The Bible says her spirit (pneuma or breath) came back. She had stopped breathing; she was resurrected.
  • The Evidence: Jesus commanded they give her food, proving she was physically restored and truly alive.

IV. Over the Future: The Divine Appointment

Whether through modern bio-hacking (like Brian Johnson’s “Project Blueprint”) or ancient medicine, humans try to avoid death. However, Hebrews 9:27 tells us it is “appointed unto men once to die.” Jesus overrides our calendars with His own eternal timeline.

Conclusion: What is Driving You?

Jairus and the woman both had to make a choice. They exercised their free will to seek Christ, and He exercised His sovereignty to perform the miracle.

Jesus is the Answer to our most desperate situations. He is the Bread of Life, the Living Water, and the Resurrection. Whether you are battling a physical illness or a spiritual void, reach out to Him today. He will not cast you out.
